Parity is alive and well in the tennis world, and that will be showcased over the next few weeks at the US Open when the best in the world take the hard court in New York.

The year's fifth major—depending on how you view the Olympics—will be wide open.

On the men's side, parity is a relative term. It's extremely unlikely anyone will touch Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray, but if the last few months are any indication, those three are about as close to each other as possible.

The parity in the women's game is obvious. After Kim Clisters won two straight majors in the US and Australia in 2010 and '11, the last six have all been won by a different lady.

Bracket Guide

Check out USOpen.org for a complete look at the men's draw and women's draw.

On the men's side, all the intrigue is in Section 3. Now that the "Big 4" is a "Big 3" with the absence of Rafael Nadal, there will be an open spot in the semifinals. Roger Federer and Andy Murray will likely meet at the top, while there are plenty of suspects to likely clash with Novak Djokovic on the bottom.

No. 4 seed David Ferrer is an obvious candidate, but he hasn't made it to the semifinals in New York since 2007 and has looked mediocre over the past month or so.

His main competition will be Janko Tipsarevic and John Isner.

Who will advance to the semis out of Section 3?

Tipsarevic struggled in his warm-up two weeks ago in Cincinnati, but don't be surprised if he repeats on his quarterfinal appearance from last year. Isner, meanwhile, is going to be a popular semifinal pick.

He's playing on home soil, coming off an impressive tournament win at Winston-Salem last week and has the huge serve to control the hard court.

On the ladies' side, in what is becoming a common theme, things are much more wide open.

No. 1 seed Victoria Azarenka will have to get past defending champ Samantha Stosur to advance to the semis, and by the looks of Maria Sharapova's section, she should roll to the semis to face whoever survives the top.

On the bottom, Agnieszka Radwanska looks to have a clear path, but Angelique Kerber and Sara Errani pose as potential threats. The winner of that section will face the winner of arguably the hardest draw.

Section 3 features former World No. 1 and 2009 US Open runner-up, Caroline Wozniacki as well as Americans Sloane Stephens (sleeper alert) and tournament-favorite Serena Williams, who must get by the "next" Serena, Coco Vandeweghe in easily one of the most appealing matches of the first round.

Day 1 Matches to Watch

For a look at the complete Day 1 schedule and rest of order of play, check out USOpen.org.

On the men's side, Roger Federer gets his tournament started in what should be a very interesting match. The World No. 1 faces the former junior No. 1, Donald Young. The American has never lived up to his potential and shouldn't challenge Fed-Ex, but seeing which way the crowd sways and how that might affect the match will be fascinating.

Andy Murray didn't get a huge break in his first-round draw as he has to face Alex Bogomolov Jr., who made it to the third round in New York last year.

I'll also be interested to see how 19-year-old Jack Sock fares against World No. 23, Florian Mayer.

As far as the women go, there isn't a ton of upset potential, but Azarenka, Sharapova, Stosur and Petra Kvitova will all be in action and worth watching to see how in form they look.
